10 Must-Do Steps for Maintaining Your Post-Facial Glow

Did you know that how you care for your skin in the hours and days post-facial is just as imperative as the treatment itself? To make the most of your serene spa session, we’ve put together 10 simple must-do steps for helping you maintain your healthy, radiant complexion. Learn how you can reap the full benefits and enhance treatment results below!

1.       Hydrate Your Skin

Did you know that your skin can lose some moisture during the process of being deeply cleansed? Staying well-hydrated throughout the day post-treatment will help your skin further flush out any of the toxins released during your facial. To keep your glow going, aim for at least 8 cups of water not only post-treatment, but also every day!

2.       Avoid Makeup

Letting your skin breathe on a regular basis is important and something you want to allow for at least 24 hours after a treatment. Layering on concealer, bronzer, and highlighter may look great against a fresh canvas but wearing makeup immediately after a treatment can clog pores. Your skin is also more prone to irritation post-facial due to any extractions and/or exfoliation completed during treatment. Allow for your skin to fully heal and absorb the products used during your facial the right way!

3.       Use SPF

The only reason you should skip SPF post-facial is if your treatment is scheduled well into the evening, where there are no rays of sun in sight. Aside from that, SPF should always be applied after treatment, as post-facial skin is more susceptible to sensitivity and UV damage. Why? The skin is often deeply exfoliated during treatment, which not only opens pores but also stimulates cell turnover. While this leaves the skin feeling clean and refreshed, it can temporarily strip the skin of its natural protective barrier, making it more vulnerable to any external environmental factors such as pollution and UV rays. Applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is key post-treatment!

4.       Keep Your Hands Off Your Skin

Although it might be tempting to touch your newly supple and radiant skin, it’s best to keep your hands away from your face. Our fingers contain natural oils and pressing bare hands against clean skin is likely to transfer these oils along with accumulated dirt and bacteria. It’s best to minimize unnecessary finger to face contact, unless you’ve thoroughly washed your hands and need to apply skincare products. If you must touch your face for any other reason, use a tissue!

5.       Stick to Gentle Products

When your skin has undergone an extensive cleansing process, it’s more vulnerable to developing irritation and forming potential breakouts. If you choose to incorporate any harsh products that contain active ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids, or overly rich, fragranced products post-treatment, you’re increasing the chances of facial redness, dryness, and even peeling. It’s best to not overwhelm your skin and to stick to mild cleansers, moisture-boosting serums, and calming moisturizers. And keep in mind that you don’t need to cleanse your face immediately after a facial. Give your skin the time it needs to absorb the products used and to rest!

6.       Avoid Heat Exposure

It might be tempting to keep the soothing ambiance going post-facial by stepping into a luxurious hot shower or steamy sauna room, but this can cause your fresh face to become inflamed and irritated. Keep your showers at lukewarm temperatures at least 48 hours after your initial treatment. Also note that tanning beds shouldn’t be part of any self-care regimen but if you must schedule a sunbed session, do so 1-2 weeks after a facial as they can trigger melanin production, resulting in discoloration, increase the risk of burns, and lead to unwanted scarring.

7.       Skip Sweaty Workouts

A gym session can do wonders for your skin on a regular basis, as it helps to boost circulation, reduce stress, balance hormones, and more. But sweat can irritate your skin and clog your freshly cleansed pores after a facial. Avoiding intense physical activity should be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours post-treatment, but lighter activities that move the body such as yoga (not hot, of course) or a casual walk in your neighborhood are more than fine to partake in.

8.       Sleep on Clean Sheets

Would you dry your body post-shower with a dirty towel? Probably not. So, sleeping on clean sheets post-facial should be a no-brainer! Having a set of fresh linens on your bed ensures minimal transfer of bacteria, dirt, and oils onto your skin while you sleep. And if you’d like to take it one step further, swapping out traditional cotton pillowcases for ones that are silk made can do wonders for your skin! The soft material makes it ideal for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, and thanks to their cooling effects, keeps skin comfortable and calm while you catch some Z’s.

9.       Eat Skin-Friendly Foods

Nourishing your body from the inside-out with foods rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats will support your skin in the best way possible! And while greasy foods full of sugar and salt may taste yummy when being consumed, they can wreak havoc on your skin. Of course, an indulgent entrée or dessert never hurts every now and again but making them a routine part of your eating can contribute not only to poor gut health but also to facial breakouts, inflammation, and dryness.

10.   Schedule Follow-Up Appointments

The final step to maintaining a healthy, post-facial glow is by staying on top of routine appointments! Getting a facial is like watering a plant. You can’t expect leaves to flourish and remain strong and healthy after one single watering. Consistency is key! The same goes for skin. When you take the time to regularly care and maintain it, you begin to see a true glow that can only come from continual nourishment and attention.

A facial is more than just a pampering experience. Treatments like these are true investments in your skin’s health and it’s important to keep the glow going beyond monthly appointments. Following these simple yet effective steps can ensure your skin will stay refreshed and rejuvenated beyond your initial spa visit. Start implementing these tips into your post-facial routine and watch how the glow unfolds… and remains well-kept!
