Electrolysis Explained: What You Need to Know

Last time we chatted about hair removal, we covered the ins and outs of laser but today, we’re stepping into the world of electrolysis! When it comes to choosing the right hair removal method, it’s essential to explore all your options. In this FAQ guide, we’ll walk you through the electrolysis process and answer all your questions to help decide if this method of hair removal is the best choice for you. Ready to dive in?

1.       How does electrolysis work?

A very fine, sterile probe (which resembles a thin needle) is inserted into the desired hair follicle and once the probe is in place, a small electrical current is applied to destroy the follicle’s growth. After the follicle is treated, the hair is removed with tweezers.

2.       What technology do you use for this treatment?

At Skinprovement, we use Thermolysis, a method of electrolysis that uses high-frequency energy to destroy hair follicles. The machine provides heat to the tip of the probe and once inserted, damages the follicle’s cells. This method of electrolysis is quick, allowing multiple hair follicles to be treated in a flash!

3.       Is electrolysis safe for all skin types?

One of the advantages of electrolysis is that it’s safe for all skin types and tones! For darker skin tones, there is no risk of hyperpigmentation or discoloration. It’s also gentle enough for sensitive areas like the bikini line and underarms. Redness can naturally occur and is common for treated areas but subsides within a few hours. Our aestheticians also ensure that treatment settings are properly adjusted for each individual client.

4.      Does electrolysis work for all hair types?

Unlike laser hair removal, which relies on dark pigment to detect and treat the follicle, electrolysis doesn’t rely on pigmentation! This method of hair removal is equally effective on any hair color including white, grey, blonde, or red.

5.      Are there side effects to electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a relatively safe hair removal method. However, like any treatment, adverse reactions are always possible. The most common side effects to electrolysis include redness and swelling around the treated area(s) and mild tenderness (like a burn). Occasionally, a scab can form as your skin begins to heal. If this does occur, it’s important to not pick at the skin and to keep the area clean and moisturized!

6.      How many sessions are needed for electrolysis?

As with any hair removal method, the number of sessions needed varies from person to person! Electrolysis is a gradual process and is completed during a particular phase in the hair growth cycle known as Anagen. During this phase, hair is connected to the follicle’s root, making it the opportune time for successful removal. Session frequency is not only dependent on the hair’s growth cycle but also the hair’s density and how regularly appointments are scheduled.

7.      Is this method of hair removal permanent?

Unlike laser hair removal (which reduces hair growth), electrolysis is a permanent solution. This method treats each hair follicle individually and once the follicle is treated; hair growth is entirely stopped! However, the occasional follow-up appointment may be needed. Factors such as stress, age, or medical conditions can cause hair to grow. Keep in mind that these hairs aren’t regrowth from treated areas but rather “dormant” follicles that have emerged.

8.      How often do I need to book an appointment?

Appointments for facial areas such as the chin or upper lip can be completed weekly or biweekly while larger areas such as the chest or arms are often spaced out further (typically 2-4 weeks) due to their larger surface area and denser hair. Full removal of hair can take anywhere between 12 to 18 months and is dependant on the area being treated, the hair’s density, and how often appointments are scheduled.

9.      Are there any restrictions on where electrolysis can be performed?

Electrolysis can be used on any part of the body. Whether you’re looking to remove hair from your face, arms, legs, or any other area, electrolysis offers a long-lasting solution for smooth, hair-free skin!

10.   How should I prepare for my appointment?

Unlike laser hair removal where shaving is recommended 24 to 48 hours prior to your appointment, electrolysis requires hair to be visible and long enough (at least 3mm) to be grasped by tweezers. You also want to avoid any sun exposure (this includes tanning beds) for at least a week prior to your appointment to minimize any potential sensitivity or irritation from developing. To make treatment more effective, we also recommend gently exfoliating the area where electrolysis will be performed a day or two prior to your appointment. This helps remove dead skin cells and any debris that may be clogging the hair follicles. Staying on top of hydration is also a great way to ensure your skin is nourished from the inside out and helps to minimize discomfort during electrolysis.

And that’s a wrap, folks! We hope this FAQ guide helped you better understand electrolysis and how it compares to other hair removal methods. Whether you’re exploring permanent solutions or simply weighing your options, electrolysis could be the perfect treatment for your skin and hair type. Remember to take your time and find what works best for you!
