How to Refresh Your Skin After a Night Out

This time of year brings about not only endless gift purchases but also holiday gatherings with friends and family that often turn into late-night celebrations. And while downing bubbly drinks and taking turns singing festive tunes is fun in the moment, your skin can start to feel the effects of continuous holiday makeup looks, limited sleep, and the over-indulgence of decadent treats and cocktails. In today’s post, we’ll be sharing six simple yet effective tips to help refresh your skin after a night out so that you can continue to shine through every get-together this season.

1.       Gently Cleanse and Remove Makeup

Although it’s tempting to head straight for bed after these seasonal shindigs, it’s imperative you remove all makeup from the evening prior to counting some sheep. If left behind, makeup can trap dirt, oil, and bacteria in your pores and can also leave your skin looking dull and dehydrated. You want to use your favourite cleansing balm, oil, or micellar water to break down makeup and follow with a gentle cleanser to remove any lingering impurities. Also keep in mind that makeup wipes aren’t a proper method for taking off product build-up! They may be convenient, but they provide inadequate cleaning.

2.       Soothe Any Swelling or Puffiness

Enjoying sugary drinks and salty foods may feel good in the moment, but the effects of indulging in these treats can appear on your skin the morning after an evening of fun. If you didn’t already know, alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it can increase your need to urinate, causing your body to lose nutrients and become dehydrated. Sodium retention due to large amounts of alcohol and food consumption can also lead to swelling both in the face and areas of the body such as the hands and feet. One of the most effective ways to reduce any facial puffiness is to take a chilled jade roller or ice globes to gently massage swollen skin. You can also incorporate under-eye patches to help brighten and soothe the area around the eyes, which are often prone to puffiness post-partying.

3.       Incorporate a Hydrating Mask

A hydrating facial mask after a night out can help rejuvenate your tired, dehydrated skin and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. If you didn’t already know, skin that’s well-hydrated absorbs products such as serums and moisturizers more effectively than skin that’s dehydrated. Hydrating masks that incorporate soothing ingredients such as chamomile and oatmeal are great for reducing any irritation or inflammation while hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin help restore any lost moisture. The skin-nourishing nutrients in these masks can revitalize the skin, leaving behind a fresh glow and dewy appearance. Facial masks are also a great way to give your skin the extra TLC it needs while winding down (or recovering) from a night of fun and offers you a moment of relaxation often needed during the hectic holiday season!

4.       Apply a Brightening Serum

A brightening serum is a great addition to your evening skincare refresh, especially after a night out. Serums that contain vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide are all great for helping even out blotchy skin tone and promoting a radiant complexion. Although many say vitamin C is best to use in the AM, it’s just as beneficial to incorporate in the evening, as it can support your skin’s natural repair process while you sleep! Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are also no strangers to providing ultimate hydration for parched skin. The former is great for soothing skin and reducing the appearance of any inflammation while the latter is one of the best moisture-retaining ingredients you can incorporate into your skincare routine.

5.       Drink Plenty of Water

Hydrating your skin from the inside out is something you should never skip out on, especially after nights where alcoholic beverages and indulgent foods were in high consumption. Large quantities of alcohol often disrupt your body’s electrolyte levels and even cognitive function, but consuming plenty of water before, during, and after heavy drinking helps reduce any hangover symptoms that tend to plague many after their partying endeavours. Getting an adequate amount of H2O in your system not only provides mental clarity and supports proper muscle function but also helps rehydrate your skin, promoting a healthy glow while reducing any inflammation.

6.       Prioritize Rest

Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the holidays can leave you feeling in a holi-daze and there’s nothing wrong with that! Even during this busy time of year, prioritize proper sleep each night and ensure that where you’re snoozing is optimized for solid rest. Skipping out on rest or receiving too little of it can lead to dull, dehydrated skin and even cause unwanted breakouts. Remember: your sleep schedule is just as if not more important than your social schedule. Adequate rest will aid in proper skin restoration, repairing damaged cells, increasing collagen production, and keeping skin calm and clear!

After all the festive fun, your skin may need a little extra care to restore its natural glow and pre-party state. By following these tips to help refresh your skin after a night out, you’ll be able to make your revived complexion your best accessory at your next holiday gathering (or three). Take the time this season to not only make memories with loved ones but also prioritize self-care.
