A black woman staring at her skin in a circular mirror.

Spring, is that you? The last time we chatted about seasonal skincare; we shared our top ten winter skincare tips. But now, it’s time to move past dull, dry, and dehydrated skin and embrace a fresh, glowing spring complexion. As the seasons change, so should your skincare routine. That means swapping heavy moisturizers for lighter hydration, exfoliating away winter buildup, and incorporating antioxidants for that radiant spring glow. If you’re ready to transition your routine and give your skin the refresh it deserves, keep reading. We’ve got all the tips you need to look and feel your best this season!

1.       Prioritize Daily SPF

SPF is a must in every season, but with rising temperatures and increased sun exposure, it’s more important than ever to apply and reapply sunscreen daily! Even on cloudy spring days, UV rays can penetrate the skin, leading to premature aging, sunspots, and an increased risk of skin cancer. As you spend more time outdoors, be sure to lather on a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to shield your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Whether you’re taking your dog for a walk, dining on a patio in the city, or simply running in and out of stores, consistent sun protection is key to maintaining healthy, radiant skin!

2.       Incorporate Antioxidants

With warmer weather and increased sun exposure, spring is the ideal time to add antioxidants like vitamin C to your skincare routine! This powerhouse ingredient helps defend against UV damage by neutralizing free radicals, which are unstable molecules that contribute to premature aging and skin damage. By protecting your skin at a cellular level, vitamin C helps maintain a brighter, healthier complexion. Plus, when used alongside SPF, it boosts your sunscreen’s effectiveness, offering even stronger protection against environmental stressors. Incorporating vitamin C this season is a simple yet effective way to keep your skin radiant and resilient.

3.       Exfoliate More Frequently

Now that winter is over, you can gradually increase exfoliation to help slough away the dead skin that built up during the colder months. However, it’s important to be gentle and listen to your skin as over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and redness. Instead of harsh physical scrubs, opt for chemical exfoliants with AHAs and BHAs to effectively dissolve dead skin cells without being too abrasive. Start with two to three times a week, but if your skin feels sensitive or tight, reduce the frequency to avoid over-exfoliating and compromising your skin barrier. After all, keeping your barrier strong is key to maintaining a healthy, hydrated complexion!

4.       Switch to a Lighter Moisturizer

During winter, thick, emollient-based moisturizers help combat dryness and protect the skin from harsh, cold air. However, with spring’s warmer temperatures and increased humidity, thick creams can feel too heavy. Now is the time to switch to a lighter, gel or water-based moisturizer that hydrates without weighing the skin down, keeping it balanced and refreshed in the changing climate! When transitioning to a lighter spring moisturizer, opt. for ingredients that provide hydration without heaviness. Keep your eyes peeled for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and glycerin as they help to hydrate and lock in moisture without clogging pores.

5.       Lighten Up Your Makeup Routine

Warmer weather and increased sweating go hand in hand, making it the perfect time to lighten up your makeup routine. As we step out of winter hibernation and embrace sunnier days, opting for minimal, breathable makeup can help prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Swap heavy foundations for a tinted moisturizer with SPF to even out your complexion while providing sun protection. Choose sweat-resistant, long-wearing formulas that stay put throughout the day, and finish with a setting spray to keep everything fresh and in place!

6.       Adjust Hydration for Warmer Weather

Staying hydrated is vital for overall health and skin, and while it’s important year-round, it becomes even more crucial as warmer temperatures arrive. When your body is dehydrated, your skin’s ability to shed dead cells and renew itself slows down, leading to buildup that can cause flaking and dryness. Drinking plenty of water helps support this natural process, ensuring your skin can stay fresh and smooth. Additionally, incorporating water-based serums and moisturizers helps lock in moisture, providing external hydration to complement the internal benefits of staying hydrated!

Spring is a reminder that change can be beautiful. By transitioning your skincare routine with the season, you’re giving your skin the care it needs to stay healthy and radiant. Remember, skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, and what worked in the winter won’t necessarily work in spring. Listen to your skin, make gradual changes, embrace the glow, and let your skincare routine bloom with the season!
